“H” is for Honoring Yourself

Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one’s definition of your life; define yourself. -Harvey Fierstein

There will be moments in your life where you pause, look around at your life, and wonder exactly where you are going. In all of life’s unexpected surprises and subtle changes it’s easy to lose track of where you are and where you want to be. However, it’s also easy to find yourself again and live your life to the best of your abilities.

It’s easier to notice the young men and women, prior to entering into their careers, to see this struggle to define oneself. It’s completely normal and okay to know young people who don’t know exactly what they want to do with their lives and who are worried about whether or not they will make a positive impact on the world. But it’s harder to identify those already moving forward in their careers that feel the same way since many feel those individuals should/and already do have a plan for the future even though it doesn’t always work this way.

Looking at it from that same perspective you may begin to find some younger individuals, although few, who have found themselves and what they want to do with their lives, and how they want to impact the world in the future.Standing in Water

With all of the talk about Miley Cyrus, her min-documentary, and Sinéad O’Connor attempted to open up to her about the evils of the industry and about what she believes actually goes through Miley’s head, I’m reminded the only person who truly knows who you are as a person and what you want to do with your life is yourself. No other person is reading your thoughts (that I know of), and as long as you’re not hurting anyone else you should be okay. A part of growing is going out in the world to explore and define yourself.

Learning more about who you are as a person and being true yourself is very much an important part of life. And remembering that will allow you to live your life the way you would like to live it.

  1. I actually discover this topic and thoroughly embraced it for myself in high-school. I can remember telling myself one day while walking to history class, “Define Jason Brown”. I don’t remember anything from class that day, but I do remember filling a sheet of paper with who I thought I was. I was eye opening and mind-grounding. I feel I learned a lot about myself that day. And I still try to stay true to that list today.

  2. Absolutely true, Jasmine. Taking time to figure out who we are (our values) and what we want out of life (our expectations for ourselves) are important as road maps for making choices in how we will live. A thought-provoking piece. Thank you. xoA

  3. A very thought-provoking piece, thank you. I love the other comments, too. As a teacher and parent, I wonder how and why our youth choose to define themselves in different ways. Harvey Fierstein is a great example of someone who wasn’t afraid to stand up and be himself despite the masses who would belittle him. Artists seem to live in a state of constant exploration of themselves, don’t they?

  4. You mean there are people out there who actually know who they are and what they want? Wow…jealous! Lol! Seriously, this is very true. Self-definition is a tough one…I’m still trying to figure myself out 34 years in. Trial and error, trial and error. 🙂
