A Writer's 21st Century Memoir.

Paula Deen and Her Diabetes

I’m pretty sure that I’m not the only one who isn’t surprised that Paula Deen has Type 2 Diabetes with all of the recipes that include two sticks of butter and a half pound of bacon. She’s a Southern woman with deep fried starches on her mind and clogged arteries in her heart. She cooks what she loves and you’re always guaranteed to enjoy the rich tastes of her mouthwatering food right before you pass out and have to be rushed to the hospital because you forgot your insulin.

Rumors have reported that the Food Network Star has been hiding her diabetes for months with the knowledge that the disease could hurt her career. With all of her cookbooks and crockpots the queen of administering heart attacks has come under fire before for her terribly unhealthy cooking, but is it really her responsibility for setting an example and cooking healthier foods during a time when the majority of the population is becoming obese?

Are you stupid? I don’t regularly chow down on Paula’s glazed donut hamburgers, and I’m pretty sure that there are other people out there with common sense as well, but I don’t need someone to remind me that eating a whole deep-fried cheesecake is probably a bad idea.

The woman who described butter as “little sticks of smiles and happiness” is not someone whom you should be getting your health advice from, but I guess the delay between her cookbook and her announcement, and her recent bid at becoming a spokesperson for Diabetes are what’s really irking health experts.

“A more responsible approach would have been that once she was diagnosed with diabetes to really emphasize to her viewers the importance of eating a healthy diet,” said Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

She probably should have told people a little sooner, but I’m a little concerned of the fact that people really just assumed that there would be no consequences to gnawing on deep fried butter, and who really cares if she’s a spokesperson for Diabetes. It’s most likely an extra sign that tells people you shouldn’t be eating all of her stuff anyways. But I mean, come on, you were taught to eat your veggies, everyone heard about the documentary Super-Size Me, and stores aren’t adding more organic foods and baked snacks instead of fried stuff for nothing.

Believe me, people know that eating Paula Deen’s food is a total death trap; they just want to eat it anyways. If you were really concerned about health and gave a sh#t about what you ate then you probably don’t need Paula Deen to tell you that her “extra special” additives of heavy cream and salt are most likely going to give you Type 2 Diabetes.  So you should probably just let Paula continue cooking herself into a Diabetic coma and remember that you should continue eating everything in moderation…

i.e. don’t add the whole two sticks of butter in that dish next time.
